Leon Goretzka faces uncertain future at Bayern Munich as he seeks to revive Germany's fortunes

Speaking to RTL/ntv, the 30-year-old midfielder acknowledged Germany's struggles at recent Euros and World Cups. "We didn't exactly fare well, especially when you compare it to the generation before us," Goretzka said. "They almost always reached the semi-finals and, of course, won the big title in 2014."

He agreed with Joshua Kimmich's comment that failure has become associated with the current generation of players. "We've had these defeats, the early exit in the group stage—things that are very rare in Germany. So the hunger and desire to change that are big," he added, stressing that Bayern's strong representation in the national team could help restore confidence and cohesion.

At club level, Goretzka's position appears increasingly fragile. His contract expires next year, and there are no signs of an extension. Criticism of his performances intensified after Bayern's 2-2 draw at Union Berlin, which ended the team's 16-match winning streak. Goretzka lost possession several times and failed to make an impact in midfield.

He has yet to record a goal or assist this season, despite being one of Bayern's highest earners. While head coach Vincent Kompany continues to use him in the Bundesliga, Goretzka has not started a single Champions League game this campaign and has played only 28 minutes in Europe.

Rising midfielder Tom Bischof has increased pressure on Goretzka's position. The 20-year-old provided the cross for Harry Kane's equalizer against Union Berlin and has three assists in 265 minutes of play this season. With Joshua Kimmich, Aleksandar Pavlovic, and Jamal Musiala forming a younger midfield core, Bayern appear well positioned for a transition.

Club insiders suggest Goretzka could leave next year, a move that would reduce Bayern's wage bill and open space for younger players.

For now, Goretzka remains focused on maintaining form and leadership, both to retain his place at Bayern and to help Germany return to the world's elite.
