The 25-year-old entered the summer window expecting to leave, with Bremen open to offers as they looked to reshape the squad. However, no club put forward a proposal that suited either party, leaving Schmid frustrated as the deadline passed.
"I feel very comfortable at Werder, but my mood wasn't great when I had to have so many meetings and phone calls," Schmid told Bild. "It was the first time since having children that I've said: things were difficult at home during those three or four weeks."
Bremen were prepared to allow the midfielder to move on, but the right opportunity never arrived. Schmid admitted the uncertainty took a toll. "Werder would not have stood in my way. There just wasn't anything suitable, and that really affected me," he said.
Despite the disappointment, Schmid has responded impressively on the pitch. He has become an important part of Steffen's midfield structure, offering energy between the lines and driving the team forward during a challenging start to the Bundesliga campaign.
His numbers reflect that influence. Schmid had produced two goals and two assists from ten league appearances, underlining his value at a time when Bremen needed stability and creativity in equal measure.
