Francis Amuzu denies World Cup influence in Ghana national team decision

The Gremio forward, speaking to a Brazilian outlet, reaffirmed his commitment to the Black Stars shortly after Ghana sealed qualification for their fifth World Cup appearance.

Amuzu, who was born in Accra but grew up in Belgium, previously turned down a national team invitation in 2022.

However, he insists that his latest decision comes from a genuine desire to reconnect with his roots rather than capitalising on Ghana's recent success.

"I was born in Ghana, so I'm happy they qualified for the World Cup. It's a wonderful tournament to play in," Amuzu told Ghana Soccernet.

"But my choice is not just about the World Cup, it's about where I come from."

His declaration has sparked debate among supporters and pundits, with some questioning the timing of his switch. Yet Amuzu remains unfazed, insisting his ambition is long-term.

"If it's for the World Cup, it will be nice," he told Asempa FM.

"If it's after the World Cup, it's also nice. I will be happy either way. It's a dream for me to play for Ghana, but I know I have to keep performing to earn that call-up."

The 25-year-old winger, who began his career at Belgian giants Anderlecht before moving to Gremio, represented Belgium at U-19 and Under-21 level but never broke into the senior side.

That opened the door for him to pledge his international future to the country of his birth, a decision he says comes straight from the heart.
