VAR uncertainty deepens as Irvin Khoza admits PSL has been left out of key talks

Khoza warned that the league cannot commit to the project without full clarity on funding, logistics and consultation.

Speaking before parliament's portfolio committee on sport, arts and culture on Monday, Khoza asked to be excused from responding to detailed VAR questions, saying the PSL was still waiting for crucial information from the South African Football Association (SAFA) and Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie, wrote the Sowetan.

His comments come days after McKenzie sent a SAFA delegation, led by former referee Daniel Bennett, to Spain to meet potential VAR suppliers as part of a government-driven fact-finding mission. But Khoza made it clear the PSL has not been involved in this process.

"Where we are as the league, it is difficult to make a contribution," he told the committee.

"We thought it would be fair to come here with one voice with the national association, but there are meetings outstanding with the minister."

Khoza said McKenzie had told the PSL in September 2024 that VAR funding would be made available, but the league still has no details on the cost structure, operational requirements or the type of VAR being considered - whether full VAR or the cheaper "VAR Light" used in some leagues.

"What makes us uncomfortable is that our funding model is sensitive," he said, pointing to the recent shift of PSL broadcast rights from MultiChoice to Canal+.

"We are not sure whether the funding will be there going forward. And we don't know what the incidental expenses are."

Khoza stressed that while the PSL supports the idea of VAR, it will not "shoot in the dark".

"We welcome the announcement, but we must comply with our obligations. At the moment, we don't have enough information. We want to return once we can talk to facts on the table," he said.

SAFA referees head Abdul Ebrahim later admitted that the PSL had not yet been adequately briefed, promising formal engagement once the fact-finding mission concludes.
