Leon Goretzka ready as Germany aim to step up in World Cup fight

The midfielder outlined how he fits into Julian Nagelsmann's plans for the campaign.

The 30-year-old has attracted more scrutiny than most Bayern Munich or Germany players in recent months, particularly after covering at centre-back for Bayern, but he has continued to influence matches when used in his natural midfield role. Nagelsmann has repeatedly made it clear that he wants Goretzka in midfield, and the Bochum-born player has embraced that responsibility.

Speaking to RTL ahead of the qualifier, Goretzka said he understood precisely what Germany required from him during the road to North America.

"Off the ball, I have the classic duties of a double pivot," he explained. "I try to bring a certain physicality and robustness to the game, which was important against Northern Ireland. When we get into the final third, I push forward a bit and try to occupy the number 10 position."

Goretzka's place for both club and country has been challenged by Aleksandar Pavlovic, who continues to take more minutes at Bayern and with Germany. However, Goretzka's ability to impose himself in more physical qualifiers still gives Nagelsmann a valuable option, especially against opponents who rely on intensity and direct play.

Germany are expected to face several teams in the mould of Northern Ireland, such as Slovakia, throughout their World Cup qualifying Group A, and those matches are likely to suit Goretzka's strengths. His mix of power, experience and late attacking runs remains important in a campaign where consistency and balance are essential.

Both Bayern and Germany benefit from having Goretzka and Pavlovic available, with their contrasting styles helping maintain freshness across a demanding domestic and international calendar. With fixtures piling up deep into the season, rotation between the pair has been viewed positively by both coaching staffs.

Goretzka has said he is willing to fill any role the team needs, but he also stressed that his best football comes from midfield, where Germany expect him to lead again tonight as the push for a place at the 2026 World Cup continues.
